cross bug.

Aug 20th 2007 9 degrees, overcast. Orangeville Ontario.

Provoked by the crispness of this morning’s air, I wasted no time peeling the road slicks off of my shiny bike, and adorning it with some mud laden knobs.

En route toward the local park I had to refrain from carving up the well watered lawns with my low pressure tires. Jogging slowly up steep pitches just weeks earlier I would have ridden, coasting quickly down the winding pathways I’m lucky to have nearby, it all began to click. My perma-smile was now irreversible.

Gradually my brain started to play tricks on me, the little park named Minora had transformed into a Belgian cross Mecca. I was blessed to now have tens of thousands of Beer swilling fan’s lining the course. They where not cheering and chanting directly to ward’s me, more laughing and dancing with me. I could almost hear the bad music blaring over the well blown speakers.
I pondered if the dog walkers I overcame on my loop where aware of the world that I was living or maybe they too where enjoying the faint wafts of oversized pretzels, coffee and coloured clothing of the fans.

I’m home now and enjoying some Canadian food. Luckily I know that same time tomorrow I can be out relishing the fine European sights and sounds that my imagination will summon.

Has anyone else caught the cross bug?

I have no doubt about what

I have no doubt about what the dog walkers think, they let me know exactly what they think of me.

I caught the bug but in

I caught the bug but in Toronto the experience was slightly different.
The water treatment plant I was riding near seemed magical but only because the wind was blowing off beautiful Lake Ontario and past the nearby Mr. Christie factory. I think they were making Pirate cookies that day.
There were no Belgian fans around only two homeless people tucked in between some bushes. No doubt it was my smooth riding style over several laps that mercifully did not wake them until the brutal off camber turns I was trying lead to tires coming off rims and the "quiet" air being disturbed by my bad words blaring.
The dog walkers, stroller pushers and commuters using the nearby bike path on my loop looked at me like I was crazy as I emerged from the bushes to compete for their space.
I did enjoy a Belgian beer when I got home, Leffe Blond, and am counting the seconds until I venture out again. I'll let you know how long Sven Nys can last on my wheel.

cross time

Got on the cross bike for the first time today. Climbed a hill up from Lake Ontario in the 39X32 standing, thats is one steep hill. Nastier than Rattle Snake.

No crowds just on guy walking up wondering what the hell I am doing.
