ROAD GROUPO vs MTB GROUP (BUILD UP Q'S)
Posted October 18th, 2007 by pretender1955
Well, I think I'm gonna build me up a new CX ride. Being a newbie I do already have a cyclocross bike, however its quite old. Keeping that in mind why would one chose a MTB groupo versus a Road groupo? Would anyone care to share the benefits/drawbacks with me. Or forward me on to some websites/literature? Thanks guys and gals, you've been quite helpful already.

Cyclocross-Training-And-Technique by Simon Burney
It is currently in its third edition and will be able to answer just about any question you have. I also recommend just going up to someone and asking them why they use what they use.
I think most people use road groupos with some form of cantilever brake for mud clearance. You probably will not need the benefit of an mtb 11-34 rear cassette or long cage rear derailleur as the hills on cross courses are not that crazy.
I have a road groupo from a Jamis Supernova that you are welcome to look at if you are interested.

Most guys I know just
Most guys I know just scrounge up whatever spare/old parts they have lying around. They spend their money on new parts for their road or mountain bikes and then use the old parts for their cross bike.
The result is most use MTB derailleurs and road cranks and shifters. For brakes it's either cantis or some modified version of v-brakes.
Of course the better you get at cross the more you'll want to spend on your cross bike.
