Drop bars or flat bars for CX racing

Good day folks.. New to the forum and interested in getting a cross type of bike for training and possibly racing in the future. I race MTB's and cross train on the road. I have tried road bikes but really dislike them and the drop bars. I am looking at a Giant Cyprus at 22lbs with a MTB style flat bar which I like. Do any CX riders use these kinds of bars. I guess I don't understand the use of road bike styled drop bars in CX racing. Can you explain.

Thnxs, appreciate your thoughts.

Welcome to cross.

The original bike choice has to do something with the history of cross. The sport was developed in the early 20th century as a way for road cyclists to maintain fitness and improve skills during the off season. Later few modifications were made to help with riding in harsh, cantilever brakes for better stopping power and additional clearance, as well the wider stays for clearance.

If you are planning to race elite category you really don't have an option - you have to use the proper cross bike (drop handlebars, 700c wheels and tires no wider than 35 mm).

In master categories you will be allowed to ride a bike with flat handlebars. The rule that still applies is that the bike cannot exceed 50cm width, so your bars have to be within that size. No bar end extensions of any type are allowed.
Some people may also argue that the drop bar bike is safer for other riders in crashes.

Hope this helps.
