Trying to find location to train someone in cross
Posted July 22nd, 2008 by mrxcross
Hi I would like some help as my daughter would like to race cross this year but the places we went to either have way to many dogs running loose or the weeds are way to long does any know a spot where its less crowded in the west end of Toronto or southeast Mississauga any help would be greatly appreciated thanks in advance

The dog walkers certainly
The dog walkers certainly own a lot of the grass this time of year. My best suggestion is along the humber river, right from the lake upwards there are numerous grass patches, hills and parks that can be used to practice skills. Hopefully someone that lives closer can add some better suggestions.
Just off the Humber Trail in
Just off the Humber Trail in South Humber Park near the Queensway and Parklawn(go to the forums section -training - South Humber for a map) there is a great circuit around the water treatment plant with some good steep hills for run-ups and climbing. The trails here are great as there is little overgrowth and in most cases they are wide enough to drive a car on. I have only seen one dog here and few people. We sometimes train here (informally) Thursday nights starting in September.
I would suggest using your imagination in any park that has a few hills and make your own course. Just be prepared to get some funny looks from people and their dogs.
South Humber is great. In
South Humber is great. In fact we should start practice again sooner than September. I would like to see Toronto do better against Ottawa (myself included).
A good bet for proper training would be the Mid-Week learn to cross clinics. It is in Mississauga. Check out the web site at midweekclub.ca.
Good luck and hope to see you out on the course!
Thanks for all the
Thanks for all the information about south Humber as it does seem like a great place with no dogs and a great climb. When does people actually start to train there as my daughter has a fear of riding with people and i trying to get her over this as by herself she is quite fast but with other people on group rides she just sit at the back afraid to go thru and take a pull any suggestions to help me get her over this fear with be quite helpful
